#ToonChat: Crowdfunding Animated Projects

#ToonChat is a new weekly event where animators and artists gather to discuss topics on Twitter every Friday from 6-7PM EST.

The topic of this week’s #ToonChat discussion is Crowdfunding Animated Projects. Raymundo Mendoza Landa, Ferguson Winston, and Jerrod Smith are joining us to discuss their recent crowdfunding experiences and share advice for artists who are interested in crowdfunding their own projects.

Friday's chat will include the following discussion topics:

• Why animators take their projects to crowdfunding platforms.
• How animated projects benefit from crowdfunding.
• Learning from successful crowdfunding campaigns.

About the chat:

If this is your first time participating in a Twitter chat, here is how the format works: Users meet on Twitter on Fridays at 6PM EST using the #ToonChat hashtag. Over the course of an hour, our account (@ToonBoom) will pose six questions (numbered Q1, Q2, Q3 …) to prompt responses from our chat participants. Be sure to include the #ToonChat hashtag in all your posts to make it easy for other participants to discover your comments. Respectful discussion between participants is always encouraged!

About our guests:

Raymundo Mendoza Landa is the creator and creative lead behind Sol Naciente, a 50-page animated graphic novel and the final project for his animation/illustration BFA from San Jose State University. The project was supported with the help of 30 volunteers and a successful Kickstarter campaign, and the comic was recently published for free online at solnacientecomic.com.

Landa will be participating in this week’s chat as @_SolNaciente_.

Project Blackguard is the brainchild of BOSC Comics founders Jerrod and Willie Smith, following a group of super-powered inmates tasked with fighting crimes. Los Angeles-based animator Ferguson Draper Winston met the brothers while studying at the Savannah College of Art and Design and approached them about turning their comics into an animated series. After a successful Kickstarter campaign, the first episode was publicly released in November. BOSC Comics is currently crowdfunding for Episode 02.
