Animachi, Chile’s professional association representing the animation industry, is launching a new training scholarship for animation artists. The program, titled Nivelatoon (a play on words on ‘level up’ and cartoon), aims to bridge technical gaps and help local animation talent secure work on international co-productions. Training for Nivelatoon is provided by Toon Boom Animation through Animachi.

Core to Nivelatoon is an immersive group training project, simulating a studio environment. The project is designed to ‘level up’ fifteen artists in a professional animation pipeline, using industry-standard tools including Toon Boom Harmony Premium. Training takes place between May, June and July 2024 with the goal of training participants to take on more senior artistic and technical roles in Chilean studios.

Samuel Restucci, Animachi’s professional representative, highlights the need for strengthening technical skills within Chile’s animation industry: “We are trying to reduce that technical gap and empower both professionals and the companies they are part of to an international standard.”

The project received funding from Chile’s Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage through the Audiovisual Fund’s group training initiative. By strengthening the technical skills of Chilean animators, Animachi aims to improve service offerings and project execution aligned with international standards.

“Currently, over 80% of animated productions use 2D rigged animation techniques, as it cuts down on time and costs. This is the animation style we’ll be focusing on during the training” said Gilberto Iniguez, an animation instructor working with Toon Boom Animation to support Nivelatoon. “This marks the first time we are providing this training to Animachi members, making it a unique experience that will unlock significant opportunities for the selected animators.”
